Here are the notes and minutes of recent meetings of the London branch of the campaign. Currently a lot of campaign activity is driven by the London branch.

2006/7/13 Getting Creative! Minutes from the N4 Planning Meeting

We had a creative evening at Housman's Bookshop on 13th July 2006. We gathered to discuss our plans for 4th November 2006, when we will be taking part in what we predict will be the United Kingdom's largest ever environmental demonstration. Here are the minutes from the meeting. Some items that were discussed, such as place names and people names have been omitted because they are embargoed or not yet agreed, either within the Campaign against Climate Change, or with our colleagues in Stop Climate Chaos. More information will appear later to confirm or deny any rumours and plans...

Campaign against Climate Change : Planning for N4 : Minutes from 13th July 2006
Held at Housman's Bookshop (under Campaign against Climate Change office).

1. Discussion around Outline Timeline for 4th November 2006

Discussions between Campaign against Climate Change, Stop Climate Chaos
and the Christian group (including Tearfund and Christian Ecology Link) have
produced a list of timings as follows (subject to modification at this stage) :-

2. Logistics & Critical : Need Further Action

IMPORTANT : There was not enough time to cover all the logistics issues. There needs to be
further work on this in later meetings.

2a. The exact timing of the big speakers

We want to be sure that the MARCH FOR GLOBAL CLIMATE JUSTICE reaches the
Stop Climate Chaos Rally in time to hear the big speakers, and that the whole of the
march has arrived, not just the front.

ACTION : CCC to raise this with Stop Climate Chaos.

2b. Cross Party speakers ?

Does the Campaign want to get in touch with Colin Challen MP about suggesting
people to invite to speak across the political spectrum ? It was mentioned that there
was a fuss about inviting a Conservative speaker.

Zac Goldsmith was mentioned, as was John Gummer. People against John Gummer
said he was part of the old Margaret Thatcher administration, and hence too close to
the bad old guard. (Zac Goldsmith is perhaps too rich to be able to identify with us ?)
Zac Goldsmith would at least be a non-politician.

DECISION : Jonathan Neale said that this was not the right meeting to discuss the
selection of speakers, so the meeting agreed to leave the big debate about exactly
who will be invited to speak until the next Campaign meeting on 27th July.

2c. Bicycle Storage

Simon Gould from the Bicycle Ride coordination, wants to know from whoever is in
logistics cooperation with the Metropolitan Police :-

2c1. Can we store bicycles in Grosvenor Square or will we have to wheel them to
the Stop Climate Chaos Rally ?

2c2. Is there a place where we can store bicycles at the Stop Climate Chaos Rally ?

ACTION : CCC to put these questions to the Metropolitan Police.

2d. Bicycle Route and Stops

The route suggested is 50 minutes, plus 2 stops of 5 minutes each for protest.
The two suggested places to protest are Australia House and Downing Street,
but we are sure the Police will not allow a stop at Downing Street. Can someone
suggest another place for protest along the bike route ?

ACTION : Jonathan Essex to contact http://www.hacan.org.uk (and Transport 2000 ?
and possibly Airport Watch ?) regarding possible protest stops on the bicycle route.

2e. Checking the Bicycle Route

The Metropolitan Police will be checking the bicycle route, so it is subject to change
and is not listed here.

2f. Postcards

The fabulous postcards by Guy Shrubsole - are an example of what the bicycle route
could distribute to advertise the bicycle route (and we could use these or a more specific
one on the day)

2g. Publicity for Bicycle Ride

The Bicycle Ride can do their own publicity. Critical Mass can be leafletted, and submissions
can be made to the LCC for the magazine. [ There was a suggestion by e-mail to contact all
the individual groups of the London Cycling Campaign individually. The details are on the
website. Also, John Ackers has a contact at LCC that could be useful. ]

ACTION : Simon Gould to put Bicycle Ride publicity plan in motion.

DECISION : James suggested we started advertising the Bicycle Ride in August. This was agreed.

3. Creative Suggestions

The agenda suggestion of breakout groups was dismissed by those present.

There was a decision to work with the Creative Suggestions as a whole group.

All the suggestions so far received were described and then discussed.

3a. Kyoto-Killer Climate Criminals

[ Written suggestion : "...dressed in black or maybe mock prison costumes. Led
by Bush, as condemned by 'mock trial' plus cronies, corporate backers etc with
labels identifying them and their 'crime' ( eg 'Phil Cooney : systematically doctored
& toned down climate change reports at behest of Whitehouse'). Banner at front
would be something like : 'Condemned for Crimes against the Planet and Destroying
our Childrens’ Future' " ]

DECISION : The meeting blocked this creative suggestion on the grounds that we should
not ask people to dress in black to identify with bad behaviour. Some will find this offensive.
It could be considered racist. Also, we're as much climate criminals as other people, so why
create the illusion of good versus bad ?

3b. Mock Trial of Climate Criminals

DECISION : The meeting blocked this creative suggestion on the grounds that the theme of
prisoners could be highly offensive and has been overused recently re Guantanamo Bay,
and in Stop the War protests.

[ NOTE : Jeannie J proposed the idea of serving a fake Blair and Bush an ASBO for bad
climate behaviour - would that be an Anti-Climate Behaviour Order or ACBO then ? ]

3c. Angels for Global Climate Justice

[ Written suggestion : "dressed in white/light colours. ( Whilst 'Climate Criminals'
represents traditional 'protest against' + satire of 'bad guys', this would represent
the positive vision that better defines the criminal negativity of Bush and the rest.
Angels might carry appropriate labels plus the (nearly150) flags of Kyoto ratifying
countries ( most of which we have already) - thereby symbolising international
cooperation. Banner at front might be : 'Angels of International Cooperation and
Global Climate Justice'. The 2 banners should be at head of columns, side-by-side,
giving our message." ]

DECISION : The meeting blocked this creative suggestion on the grounds that it could be
taken as too religious - and that we do not want to associate white with good and black with
bad (even if we use "light forces" versus "dark"). Although both the Climate Criminals and the
Angels concepts were suggested to create a theme for the march, in fact it could be too complex.

3d. Green Sashes

The meeting heard the proposal that we should adopt the approach taken by Make Poverty
History in choosing a colour as the theme for N4, and after some debate we settled on the
colour green.

DECISION : The meeting decided to ask everyone to wear something green to N4, and to
make some simple green sashes from reclaimed/recycled material to hand out (for a small
donation) to people who did not have anything green with them.

The slogan for the green sashes could be something like "If You Miss The World - There's
No Future" or "I'm Not Missing The World" referring to the sashes that beauty pageant
contestants wear.

3e. Climate Monsters

The meeting heard the proposal to still have a few people in costumes as a photo opportunity
and a stunt for the march - and that these costumes should depict Climate Monsters. These
will be highly visible - a troupe of people will be needed to make them and wear them. It was
felt that a few people with iconic images could have a large impact, and that monsters could
be a good theme. Mandy suggested a Climate Monster with a George Bush face coming out
of an oil barrel.

DECISION : The meeting decided we should have Creativity Workshop days to make the
monsters and other props (and the green sashes).

ACTION : Kelly H (or Duncan and Jo) to approach BSVCC http://www.bsvcc.org to see if
we can negotiate free use of the "Rehearsal Space" for days of creative construction of
monsters and sashes. Other alternative venues suggested were LARC London Action
Resource Centre and the Synergy Project.

ACTION : CCC to put a call out to Creatives volunteers for these Creative Workshop days.
Sarah Joyce and Duncan Law have the list of the people in the Creatives breakout from
3rd June conference. CCC need to ask people to donate materials.

ACTION : Jonathan E to ask the WDM World Development Movement if they would like to
collaborate on creative ideas for N4. [ NOTE : The next WDM camp is on Climate Change
and the title will be "Whose Rules Rule ?" This will be mid-October 2006. ]

3f. Creative Leafletting Strategy

There were several excellent suggestions regarding printed materials that we could
design for use on the day of N4 itself, but also beforehand : including :-

* Putting "10 Things You Need To Know About Climate Change" on literature.
* Putting "10 Things You Can Do Yourself About Climate Change" on literature.
* Bookmarks, business cards, beer mats and postcards could be used.
* To creatively leaflet people, why not use the "Climate Fairy" costume idea -
have the people handing out literature to be dressed in their own ways as fairies
to mark them out. We need to emphasise we are not "green meanies"...

ACTION : Nathalie K, Guy Shrubsole and Sarah Joyce to be asked to come up with
some fresh ideas for literature for N4 and before.

3g. Bonfire Party

DECISION : The meeting blocked the idea of a Bonfire Party as being too much work
to organise in addition to the march. A bonfire was said to be bad for Climate Change.
A bonfire was also said to be climate neutral. Also, fireworks were said to be eco-unfriendly,
and threatening to wildlife. Also, it was said that a permit would be needed for a public fire.

There was talk of having a get-together in the evening of N4 in a pub somewhere, but not
too far away like it was last year...

Also, there are rumours that the Mayor of London is going to host a fireworks party, and
that will be much larger than anything we could attempt to put on, so let's leave this to
"Green Ken".

3h. Bonfire Sculpture

DECISION : This idea was left to the Creative Workshops to take on if they want to.

3i. Hot Air Globe / Balloon

The meeting thrashed out quite a few ideas about having a large Globe, or Hot Air balloon,
depicting somehow that politicians are still blowing hot air. This conversation did not
result in any decisions or actions, so could be considered further.

3j. "Remember, Remember, the 4th of November"

The meeting did not discuss this catchphrase in detail, so it could be considered further.

3k. Information Posters

The meeting discussed the proposal to have fixed banners at various points
along the route with jingling little bells and little cymbals hanging from them.
These banners would have information that should strike people as "Ouch !
I didn't know that. I need to join in !" There was assent to the idea that we need
to have decent quality banners.

DECISION : The meeting blocked this idea as being difficult to arrange in terms
of logistics on the day - but that we should have such banners mobile in the
crowd. Something else for the Creative Workshop days to make.

3l. Artist & Public Building : Neon Sign to read "Campaign against Climate Change"

This idea is in progress. Nathalie K can help the artist source the finance. The meeting
thought that it would be possible to have some tiny input into the actual wording or
wordings of the message. Some of the details of this project should be kept secret.

3m. Carbon Caps

The idea of asking people to bring along their own handmade or handsewn caps with
a large C stitched to them to symbolise the fact that we need an upper limit or cap on
Carbon Emissions.

DECISION : The meeting felt that this idea could be for merchandising, but not for the
march. Anyway the green sashes were better as a clothing theme to visually unify us.

ACTION : Jo to ask Nathalie to approach clothing designers about the prospects of
sourcing them, ethically.

3n. Eco-Churchills

DECISION : The meeting blocked the idea of getting some people dressed as Churchill
waving V signs and things that are not really cigars, as it was felt that references to war
would not be appropriate, especially given the imperialist position of Churchill

There was a suggestion that we would not object to Eco-Gandhis however, and Nick
Hutton volunteered to make weave his own dhoti and Be The Change. We don't want
to be too UK-centric.

3o. International Flags

There was some discussion about how to use the 150 flags of international countries
that we have. No concrete conclusions were drawn.

3p. Eco-Chic Fashion Show

IMPORTANT : This idea came up in the pub after the main meeting.

The basic idea is to design and make green eco-chic fashionable and stylish clothes
that can be modelled in an outdoor fashion show (no venue means no cost).

If all the clothes are green, then this is promotional for N4.

The clothes could be made of secondhand or reclaimed green materials, and put
together in the Creative Workshops we are planning.

A street fashion show would be a cool photo opportunity !

On the back of this fashion show, we could auction the clothes on a website
known as "greenbay", and take it forward as an ongoing activity.

ACTION : Sarah and Jo and Jonathan to contact Nathalie and others regarding
help with designers who could help with this.

4. Other Discussion

4a. Naming

The meeting was very much in favour of calling the N4 march the

"MARCH FOR GLOBAL CLIMATE JUSTICE"

as the concept of Climate Justice will be a good rallying point for many groups in Civil Society,
including (perhaps especially) the Christian Churches and Development / Aid Agencies.

4b. Music

The N4 Rally will have some music, followed by speakers, followed by music.

There will be a tight schedule, so probably not much of a chance to invite whomever to play
during the CCC Rally part of the day.

Mandy wants to invite Rhythms of Resistance. If they come they could play along the march
to keep us dancing !

4c. Fundraising

16th September 2006 will be a day of national activities in support of 4th November 2006,
and we hope to do some fundraising on that day.

We are also in discussion with some people who would like to see a big open air concert
as a benefit gig for the Campaign against Climate Change.

There are also ideas for asking every bar, church hall, restaurant, theatre and community
centre in London to hold an "unplugged" acoustic music concert in support of N4 - maybe
even on the evening of N4 - or the evening before.

2006/7/25 Minutes of monthly branch meeting

MINUTES OF CCC LONDON MEETING 25 JULY

Minutes by Jonathan N.

INTERNATIONAL. Phil reported on the G8 and Russia, Jonathan
N on latest list of countries participating. Now include New
Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Kenya,
South Africa, Costa Rica, Mexico, USA, Canada, Norway,
Finland, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia,
Czech, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain,
Portugal, Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland, and probably
Barbados and Costa Rica.

REPORT ON SCC AGM by Nick H. Went very well, very friendly.
We stood Phil for the one place open on the board, may or may
not get in. They want to coordinate the arrangements for Nov
4 very closely with us.

PARTY OUTSIDE US Embassy. Next one on 19 august, fun and
music, 2 to 6 pm. Then as part of the national local actions on
Sept 16th. Meeting needed to coordinate it.

LONDON BIG PUBLIC MEETING – George Monbiot invited. Has
since accepted for Oct 4. Lond discussion of other possible
speakers. Calvin emphasized that he was doing the national
day of action organizing, so the people at the London meeting
would have to organize for the London public meeting. PHIL to
book speakers and venue. PHIL and CALVIN to get leaflets
printed and for distribution from next London meeting.
INTERNAL MOBILISATION – General agreement that we had to
start getting seriously organised for the demonstration now.
That means small working groups to do the actual work. We
decided on the following group meetings:

CREATIVE, meets weds 9 august at the office, 6.30, Sarah to
coordinate meeting.

OUTREACH, meets 6.30 on tues 8 august at the office, John A
to coordinate meeting.

2006/8/08 Minutes of Outreach meeting

Brief notes and actions from outreach meeting at 5 Caledonian Road.

Calvin suggested we tackle

Phil announced that Sarah was doing new flyer that would hopefully be ready for climate camp.

James suggested that we need to hit the students union freshers week events and the remaining festivals and London events. like Notting Hill and FinFest.

Action: Hardwin works for student graduate placement and is able to get a a list of Freshers Fair dates.

It was noted that P&P, another SCC member, had their own pre I-count event and we needed to be sensitive.

Jonathan E reported that he and others would be promoting Nov 4th at Christian Ecology Link festival (30,000) over bank holiday.

Action: JA to get leaflets to FinFest on August 13th.

Could Guy do ring around of colleges and Universities as per last year?

Acton: James going to contact NUS to find out whether they are having another Day of Action on climate.

Eric mentioned that he knew someone on London Student.

Action: Jonathan E to provide Young Greens contact list to office.

Action: Jonathan E to check greenworld publication dates and check that event correct in diary. Can we get flyer into next publication.

Discussed how the London branch could help promote local meetings.

Action: Jonathan E going to talk with Jonathan N and Phil about outreach to Respect and organising public meetings.

Phil thought that FOE liked the US embassy and march but would confirm this.

Greenpeace doing their own march.

Action: Fiona? to gather a list of scientists that might be able to provide or suggest local speakers.

ACTION Fiona? volunteered to promote N4 at the SUBD? (spiritual group) congress and possibly do a workshop.

ACTION Fiona D going to contact any Jewish Environment Groups.

2006/8/09 Creative Group Meeting

Phil spoke about the idea of a March for Climate Justice on Nov 4th

--The idea of this concept is to shift the emphasis from the fact that we are against the bush administrations position on climate change
to
--The fact that we are for an equitable settlement to the problem of climate change, with the biggest polluters acting first and fastest not styming the process.

Phil spoke about previous visual successes, the ability of small well made/conceived props to work was made. Examples given included the statue of taking liberties and the George bush/ reaper.

The possibility of street theatre was raised and the time slot for this also discussed, between 11:30 and 12:00 when the bikes arrive there are no other central activities planned so a stationary activity/play would be fine.

John Hogget was suggested as someone to discuss street theatre with. Ruth to find volunteer to take on the more general activity of finding interested people. Doug was mentioned as a contact for theatre.

We could also need some photo opportunities, both at the beginning of and during the march.

One possibility for a photo op would be huge inflatable globe, these can be bought, Calvin to try and get funding for this.

We have a fibreglass globe but it is bulky and requires several people to deal with so this isn't ideal.

A giant egg timer is quite a good visual cue that highlights the urgency of the situation.

HCAN have a huge airplane, Ruth to contact them to ask them to bring this along, Ruth also to contact the various other groups and ask them to bring props if they have them.

The twin columns of the march could be Bush<--> Angels which is easily done visually or
Climate Criminals <--> Victims of Climate Crime

The international theme was widely regarded as an important part of the theme.

John Sinha to go through stop the war contacts and try to involve them.

We where all keen to start getting meetings together to actually build things. As a start Phil has determined to order sticks for placards and bush wanted posters.

One possible idea is for a prop is a huge burnt globe with 'bush was here' written on the side.

The idea of representing emissions using balloons to represent carbon dioxide was considered worthy of further consideration, what would be the most effective way to do this, per capita or gross levels of co2?

The idea of 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse was suggested, bush Cheney etc., to be the horsemen. The structure would be around shoulder/head hight and would be on a trailer of some sort.

Sarah J to look into practicalities of this, how would it be put together?

Phil T to contact Lucy about limehouse town hall or try and make other arrangements.

John Howard/Dick Cheney masks need to be ordered, Calvin to do this.

The idea of Dollar Notes/Cheques altered to discuss ecological debt/climate debt is quite versitle for either large props or small leaflets, Sarah J to look at this in coordination with Phil.

2006/8/11 Minutes of Media and Publicity meeting

Present: Phil Thornhill, Duncan Law, Calvin Jones, John Ackers, John Sinha, Eric.

The meeting was small but productive. We feel we are closer to having a strategy tied to a time line now. There is lots to be done. We need people to coordinate efforts in certain areas like TV. Some people have offered to oversee area such as Radio, Cycling press, Internet news and blogs. There is research to be done to build a database of useful media outlets, contact names and numbers/emails and editorial policy, deadlines. (action Phil) We are looking at building a contact database so that there is a central repository for all information but work can be done from home by anyone at any time. This will pay huge dividends over time (capitalistic image)

Duncan had asked Beth Tegg, SCC press officer, for Press Guidelines for constituent organisations. These do not yet exist and are dependent on a meeting between Phil and Ashok (SCC director) to agree how we will work together. Phil to set up meeting. Should he be supported at that meeting?

So we are still operating in a bit of a limbo.

It was noted that a Planning Nov 4 forum had been set up on www.portal.campaigncc.org including a thread for Promotion and Media. People are welcome to post ideas there. It will also be used for important documents which do not need to be confidential. eg to do lists which people can sign up to but NOT reports of conversations with journalist etc.

Meanwhile...Sarah Joyce has done some really excellent graphics for fliers for the two recent parties. We need to plan ahead so that she is not under such extreme time pressure. There was a perception that the SCC leaflet was rather bland. see

We need the design as soon as possible for the Climate Camp starting 26 Aug. It should be checked by some of the Media Group before going to press. For Nov 4 we need to have flier as a pdf file on the website and put 'download more at...' (or similar) on the flier. We need a fast loading html page advertising Nov 4. It needs to have the design of the leaflet built in. John to liaise with Sarah Joyce We need a page for viral email adverts, downloadable email footer etc for members to use to promote Nov 4. Once established send email to all supporter urging them to use these resources.

Press releases:
SCC's first announcement went out about a week ago. They will be formally launching the 'branding' for Nov 4, see www.icount.org.uk at the beginning of October.
After discussion a rough Time Line for the press campaign was outlined: (NB a separate Time Line needs to be diaried for listings which depend on publications lead times see list below) We should take advice on the best time to release so as not to be overshadowed by other events and stories eg Party Conferences. Unless we can find a useful hook to those events or stories.

First press release ASAP. Perhaps wait until leaflet has been produced. Could be sent as an attachment?? It will be largely for 'forward planning' for media organisations. Beginning of September: Press release for National Day of Action on 16 September. It will be the 'launch of our campaign which will culminate on Nov 4 and at the Nairobi Climate Talks'. Different events will happen as appropriate all over the country but we will concentrate on publicising (especially to local media) the London event: a 'Race against Climate Doom' past the Exxon Mobile office ending at Grosvenor square. We need an angle on this and since George is also speaking at the Rally to make sure it will be different. Phil to talk to George about what angle best to take for the meeting. Phil suggested a debate about badness of Bush People. Phil Cooney suppressing scientific reports. It would be good to get Seymour Hersh to speak. Duncan said people are hungry for real information. eg How bad will it get how soon.. which will motivate them to come on the march and get involved.

October 2 final press release for London Climate Crisis Meeting

Thursday Oct 19 (roughly 2 weeks before) Press release for CLIMATE MARCH Nov 4.

We need quotes from speakers. Phil ask them for quotes. It should have an angle and be visual. We should have something for the picture desk eg Nathalie's projection artist who will project a call to the demo on buildings in the week leading up to Nov 4. We should try and get on the ground coverage on the day. We need advice and creative ideas for this. Visual ideas that came out of the Creative Meeting is the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, each identifiably a Bush person in a tableau above the march. Perhaps on a cart loaned by Duncan's theatre company... Duncan suggested a 'wicca globe with Bush in or on it' which could then be burned as a guy at a radical firework party that we offer it to than night. A good photo op. We could do both.

We should think about the tabloids. Should we do separate press releases? JA and Phil have reservations. Take advice. We need to tell the same story but perhaps with different emphases eg Indep 'climate justice' Mail 'babies drowning in Bangladesh'. Or two different coverages to the different media on different days... We should take advice.

This should be followed up with an organised telephone campaign offering interviews, articles, pictures, angles, to try and get (free) editorial coverage. We can usefully build relationships with journalists for future coverage. Some journalists who care about the subject have offered advice in the past about how to get more coverage.

Thursday 2 Nov

Final press release for CLIMATE MARCH. Mention projection action as photo opportunity. Need to coordinate with Nathalie's projection artist so that we can publicise his work to then get us further publicity. We should target picture desks. Think of what we're going to offer the different outlets that is appropriate to their needs. eg interviewees for radio.
Need slant or news story specifically to do with our action.

THE GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

International branding was delegated to Ted Glick in US. Nothing has happened so far. Ask Sarah to do logo. Brief: Least amount of words. Date. Has globe and something CC related.

International Press Releases announcing the extent of the International Demo to be sent to Press agencies and National Papers and International papers with UK offices. Also the association of foreign correspondents/foreign press association. (?) We should take advice as to when the best time is. It would be good to get high profile international quotes. Perhaps also a quote from IFEES.

Discussion as to whether we want to be promoting ourselves internationally as the Global Climate Campaign or leaving it to countries to promote not just their own events but the Global-ness of it too to their national media. It was decided anyway to put draft international press release on international list for organisers to use as they wish.
It was felt there should be more materials on the international website. A Resource Pack – ideas teeshirt designs. downloadable literature on CC and on campaigning. A draft leaflet to hand to passers by explaining the demo. What else?

Post to the International email list asking for high profile international quotes. Ask them why they're doing the demo. It would be good to get a picture of the different motivators of different countries that are beginning to be affected by CC

We should put a page of promotional opportunities on the website (portal) so that people who are going can take materials and do promotion.

1. Office and IT support

· The migrated website is now up and running on its new host flump.
· The website now has a set of links to regional groups, which detail their meetings
· The introduction of software called Civic Space is imminent and this will allow local groups to update their own local webspace and help with communication generally.
· The office now has a 2nd PC – a laptop, which is working now.

Up and coming office based work

· Sorting out addresses to take out duplicates from 2 different data sources (outlook, and access), and preparing them for a mail out about Dec 3rd.
· Stuffing envelopes for the mail out – Date to be decided
· Sending out suggested actions to local groups and communicating with them
· Issuing a draft of a press release that can be adapted by local groups

Appeals for support and Actions

There is some urgent work for which a website designer is required. Please see Phil.

A volunteer to work with Phil in the office is needed; at first to work with Phil and later to cover the office during Phil’s absence. Please cast your net wide; e.g. notify recruitment agencies for voluntary sector to see if we can find a volunteer that way.

Phil will be running an intro to the office work on Saturday 29th Oct at 10:00AM. Any interested parties are welcome.

2. Demo Logistics

Phil reported that he had found a source of cheap flags, and potentially T-shirts too.
There was some discussion about the wording for the flags which led to a debate on a possible re-naming of the group. The alternative name suggested was ‘The Climate Campaign’.

It was agreed that no name change would be likely before Dec 3rd, but that it ought to be considered properly on a separate occasion, as there was a strong enough feeling toward a name change.

The design for new placards was also discussed briefly. It was agreed that people should bring their designs and plans to the meeting proposed in 2 week’s time.

The Demo logistics sub group reported that they were making progress. They plan to meet again on Tues 1st Nov at the CCC office.

Appeals and Actions

· Anyone with ideas for a source for a stage to use in Grosvenor Square
· Sound and a gazebo are needed too
· Up to 50 stewards needed, including some for the bike rally. Please send an e-mail in with your name and preference bike or march. There will be a meeting in the office on 1st Dec for stewards.

3. Nov 22nd London Public Meeting

Speakers are now for the most part engaged. Tony Juniper, Mark Lynus, Norman Baker and Phil will definitely speak.
Just need one more speaker and preferably a female speaker to balance things out.

Rosie agreed to chair the meeting.

Actions and Appeals
· Appeal for a venue holding 200 people or more. Current proposed venue may not be big enough.
· Leaflets are still to be printed.

4. Fundraising and Finances

Phil reported that we are spent up, due to leafleting costs in the main. He highlighted the main costs for the organisation and impending spending. He also mentioned sources for funding, currently being pursued and agreed to chase harder on two hot prospects. Sources include Climate Initiative Fund, FoE & Reggie Norton.

Hilary agreed to co-ordinate an urgent e-mail appeal for cash, and to include bank details so that people can use online banking to donate.

Actions and Appeals

· Appeal for people to seize every opportunity to wave a collecting bucket, e.g. at leafleting venues such as tube stations and of course at public meetings
· Appeal for volunteer to work concentrating on fundraising and to give it a lot of attention.
· Ideas and volunteers for a fund-raising event needed
· Agreed to put out an advert for a volunteer to work on fund-raising

5. Speakers for Public engagements

Appeal for people willing to speak at public meetings. There are lots of regional meetings going on – see the website.

6. International work
Many of the European Green party groups were encouraged to put on some sort of demonstration or action on Dec 3rd at their Kiev conference. The response was encouraging and based on the feedback provided here it looks like at least 23 countries will be demonstrating in some way with us.

Appeals and Actions
· Volunteers needed to keep up the work, finding and persuading groups abroad to take action with us on Dec 3rd. Smaller groups seem to be more ready to do this than the more established organisations.
· John agreed to put out a few ideas for initial communications to these groups, so that others can circulate to their friends and contacts.

7. Other reports from sub-groups
The planned student meeting will go ahead and the venue will be the London school of Hygene

Finsbury Park tube was leafleted with some success. Suggest that if others do this, an effective approach is to have a large placard that people can see before you try to pass them a leaflet.

It was noted that the website has two variations of the current poster for people to use – one with the dead body floating and one without.

Appeals and Actions

· More leafleting needed to publicise London demo, e.g. at Tube stations and markets. Any volunteers to speak to Phil.
· The NUS will have a day of action and it was suggested that they may print publicity for it themselves. Suzanne to contact Sue at NUS and ask her to contact Phil.

Netherlands and Belgium yet to get on board and German Greens hard to contact. Tracking all this is proving a challenge, but is a token of our success.

Campaign against Climate Change - London
Minutes from 14/12/2005

The first part of the meeting focused on how we could improve on the organisation of the demo and the build up to it for next time.
We came up with the following concrete suggestions for improvement:

On the day...

Route of March
need a shorter route - avoids people drifting off and march breaking up
– maybe start at Parliament square? But shouldn’t be too short (e.g. just P.S. to G.S.)

Cycle Protest
Starting point needs to be more accessible.
Need to ensure better pictures of it
Could go through central London – 7 mile contour?
Join with demo? – danger of clogging

Stewarding
Need more stewards
March stewards need to be better spread out and peeling off more thought through
More emphasis on keeping march moving and how to deal with situaltions like the sit-down
Need to keep people off pavements

Props
Big type to fill placard works best
need less placards perhaps
use colour on placards
compare with global placards on design
Need a van and van driver for whole day
encourage home-made placards
Need to come up with some good and catchy slogans!
Go to independent for money???
make sure we take all litter home
get our own tabbards made for stewards

Photo Opportunities
More costumes and photo session - need to think more about this

Grosvenor Square
need to brief speakers about using mic
rinky dink relaying sound is good
should have slave speakers
perhaps need higher/bigger stage (money?)
make more reference to global links/actions to build excitement

Speaker line-up - start planning as soon as date is confirmed
should be decided much more in advance
need to get a popstar/celebrity and not just politicians

Media - need to start working on this as early as poss
need to attract celebrities to get tabloid coverage
More imaginative things for media than 'march and rally'
Need to harness professional support for media strategy and press releases
Emphasise that London coordinated global day of action
Need to be clear what our message for the media is.
Need a proper editor for the video. Small budget to spend. Contact John Sinha.

Collections
Need to make sure people who are collecting have wigs/tabbards/campaign ID

In the build up to the demo...

Publicity and Outreach
Need several designs of leaflets - invite regions to design flyers
Main leaflet to be more accessible to the mainstream - creative
Leaflet to be educational as well as promoting demo
Focus on two different target audiences: activists and general public - different strategy for publicity
Suggest CCC agree on a clear branding for leaflets but then encourage supporting groups to produce their own leaflets.
Do wristbands.

Local groups and growing grass-roots nationally
Could off-load complete tasks (e.g. outreach to certain groups) outside London
Some groups (e.g. teachers outreach) did not work well – need to start again now.
Local groups worked well.
Student group. Only scraped surface of what we could have done. Not really a proper day of action on November 16th. Could do a lot more next time.
Could do more with and seed more local groups.
Local groups could have some fun actions. For example South London plan fundraising social next.
Build on National network. E.g. a national network of actions across the country.
Need designated day for local actions 3-6 months before Nov 2006.
Also need designated day of local actions in run up to next march to build momentum (e.g. 3 weeks before march) so events are not planned to clash.
Need to link our campaign to airport expansion campaigns and roadblock
Should distribute our material locally.

Local meetings
Local meetings should start much earlier and avoid few days before the demo.
Could have more feedback, photos and press releases from local meetings.
All future local meetings should have a young person (e.g. 6th form rep) on panel.
Big London meeting should be planned earlier, on a date to suits big speakers.
Need local level organisation and meetings across London.
Should be active in going to other peoples meetings not just relying on people coming to ours (e.g. schools, unions, WI etc etc)
All of our speakers should be doing a couple of different meetings a month.

CCC Website etc
Need to improve web design
Need to ensure all joining the forum are automatically joining the campaign – treated as the same group of people
Need to shift to a new contact database on the web
CCC-London is like a central group list, ‘completely open to those who attend the London meetings.
Some stuff on the CCC-London list should be on the forum

CCC Office
Need to sort of office volunteering in a formal way – to advertise in formal way for one or two volunteers.
Propose advert for volunteer intern now so in habit of running an office. This person should be able to help with fundraising.
Set up with volunteers so Phil able to leave office to do other things easier.
Need a laptop
Need a second phone-line for office volunteer

General Planning; Next years demo, Gigs, Planning Meetings
Need to plan earlier ahead for next years demo. National planning meeting should be earlier.
Should do, but recognise resources required.
Propose fund-raising benefit in March, big summer event, something nearer next international demo.
Make sure gig does not detract attention/resources in run up to demo.
Plan gig as separate issue and timescale. Could use celebrities and be way to get massive advance publicity of next march.
Hyde Park. Jenny Jones has proposed to Ken Livingstone as an idea – to raise profile of the issue.

In the second part of the meeting Phil outlined his ideas regarding the priorities for the campaign in 2006 and there was a brief discussion around this, to be continued at the January meeting. Some of the main outcomes of this were:

CCC Focus of Campaign
Need to pay as much attention on individual consumption instead of just politics.
Advantages and disadvantages of presenting Bush as a central focus
Advantage – focus on Bush (and Blair) so no future delays on CC negotiations
Disadvantage – not effective to engage mainstream, partly as negative and foreign
Problem that this is a campaign against (negative).
Need to build local groups around education and lifestyle change.
Big NGOs have dropped StopEsso campaign. We could do this and make the link from StopEsso to Stop Bush to Climate Change.
Like to do something more than vigil at US Embassy. Perhaps a party with music?
We need to slap Bush and Blair but also recognise that their position in Montreal was very weak. We need an equal positive focus to show people what action is needed. We need to keep in balance between anti-Bush and positive action needed on climate change.
Need to consider our position, and be prepared to be a small player in support of Stop Climate Chaos as a UK movement.
Need to play our part in acting on the UK government agenda, in particular avoiding a retreat to nuclear through the government energy white paper.
Not forget importance of WTO on climate issues and need to work with those campaigning against WTO.

CCC Structure and Accountability
Need for a policy committee / board of directors for CCC
Need for a separate accountability structure to make sure the national grassroots network is represented (not all decisions made in the open London-CCC meetings).
Need a clear structure to direct/accountable for the main CCC London office and activities.
Need to work out agree the democratic form CCC wants to take both for national structure and London based organisation and then ensure web design reflects this.
Should identify problems in CCC-London meeting then refer to sub-groups for solutions.
Need to convene a CCC image sub-group.
Need focus groups for campaign material.
Need to convene a resources sub-group (campaign materials and merchandise to support local groups)
Need to have active international sub-group. Need people to volunteer to go to ESF meeting in Vienna (1st w/e in Jan), meetings in Venezuala and Mali at end of January, Karachi in March, and also other events such as the European Social Forum (Athens in April), Green Party, Trade Union meetings etc.
Should we aim to form a strategic link to development NGO like WDM – perhaps by inviting to do a meeting with us at ESF/WSF?

Other things to arise from meeting

The meeting agreed to put Phil forward for a competition looking for 'sustainability champions' under the category of climate change. Paula will do this.
First Open Meeting of Stop Climate Chaos on 24th January. Also expect a meeting with them before this and a small action in March/April. - need to agree a delegation of up to 3 to represent the campaign at the meeting on the 24th

National Conference to take place on February 11th with delegates from all over the country. Probably to take place in London as most accessible for people to travel to from all over.

John Sinha - going to try and sell the idea of using a traditional CMS system for the main part of the web site to Phil.

Mary, Chris - going to look/evaluate alternatives to Drupal.

Chris - going to design alternative www.campaigncc.org home pages with different menu structure and smaller pages.

Soumaya - reviewing forum/portal pages.

John Sinha - going to draw up proposals for handling membership.

John A - Going to set up a demo site using Drupal again but with the home page and menu set up to match the alternative www.campaigncc.org home page above.

Campaign against Climate Change, London
Minutes of Meeting – 12th January 2006

1. International Report
- Phil and Jonathan N and Nathalie went to the ESF in Vienna. Good vibes.
The date for November 11th widely agreed but France closes down on this day.
- Nick Lee currently meeting and making contacts in Nairobi.
- Phil, Tony Staunton, CCC from Newcastle going to the WSF in Caracas, Jan05
- Nick Hutton going to the WSF in Bamako, Mali at the same time.
- WSF in Karachi now delayed until March
- Next ESF planning meeting in Frankfurt, will include CCC networking, 5 March.
- Note: next ESF will be on the beach in Athens, 4-7 May.
- Need volunteers for international subgroup – please contact Phil first

2. Report on Meeting with Stop Climate Chaos (SCC)
- Phil met with Ashok of SCC. SCC aim to build effort towards UN climate talks in November. Excellent meeting. Good linkage forming between SCC and CCC, with complementary messages. Carbon Dating lobby of MPs is on 1st March (see email).
- Planning meeting on 24th January. Jonathan Neale and Duncan to represent CCC.

3. National Meeting, Saturday Feb 11th
- Agreed need a national structure with agreed national/London split, balance between different groups in CCC, and representation from working groups.
- Objective to report back, elect a national organisation and decide what it does, campaign focus etc. First gathering of CCC not to protest. Voted small group to prepare agenda, structure (Phil, Jonathan N, Jonathan E, John S, Rosie, Richard).
- Others, such as Hilary and John Ackers may want to join.
- Duncan and Nathalie volunteered to help with logistics.

4. Actions and Campaigns
- Phil noted good to have different action at US embassy such as music, a new angle
- Proposed countrywide StopEsso campaign. Suggested to rebrand with a new angle as StopEsso largely unsuccessful. Suggested local actions could link to local councils.
- Fundraiser/social
- Support Stop Climate Chaos and their proposed events (see above)
- Support Big Ask. Lots of support for this idea.
- Rapid reactions. Suggested include stunt on energy (anti-nuclear) debate soon.
- Other suggestions included Borneo forest speaker for our AGM meeting, positive campaign for local groups (e.g. carbon rationing in Midlands), not to do too much apart from the international march in November.

5. Organisation
- Need office and fundraising volunteers. Rosie to draw at volunteer job descriptions/adverts and liase with Phil. Need to decide terms (e.g. lunch and bus pass allowance) so agree a budget through the finance sub-group.
- Clare D volunteered for editing/content for press, French, Portuguese translation.
